I smelled burning muffins the second I got out of the shower.
Rex had requested that I make muffins as a part of our Sunday Breakfast, and I had happily put the dough in the oven before I jumped in the shower. As soon as I got out of the shower, I remembered that I did that.
I hurriedly wrapped a towel around myself and ran into the kitchen. I opened the oven, and my wet hair dripped onto the oven door. The droplets hissed angrily on the hot surface, making a "Tssss tsss tssss" noise every time another one fell. I reached for an oven mitt and hurried to retrieve the burning muffins before the damage rendered them ruined.
In my haste to grab the muffins out of the oven, I burned my arm on the oven shelf. As I yelped in pain, my arm jerked and one of the muffins rolled off of the pan. It landed top side down on the oven rack. I put the rest of the muffins down and reached back in to try to grab the rogue treat. I was trying to grab it with my oven-mitted hand, and I just ended up pushing it further into the oven. I threw the oven mitt off of my hand, listening to the muffin sizzle on the hot rods of the oven rack. I grabbed it with my bare hand and threw it on the muffin pan before I could get more burnt.
The poor muffin looked like it had just spent a good part of its life on a George Forman Grill. The black grill marks branded onto the top of the muffin made it look like I had been trying to make a breakfast steak. I sighed dejectedly and called to Rex, "I think I messed up the muffins...sorry."
Rex came into the kitchen to survey the damage. He took one look at them and exclaimed, "SWEET! This muffin looks GRILLED! I want that one!" I looked at him, surprised. I had underestimated my "failure." I learned an important man law today: EVERYTHING is better when it is grilled. Including, apparently, muffins. Who knew?
If you ever find yourself craving grilled muffins, I am pretty sure that I am the only person in town who makes them. So stop by and I will make a special batch of them just for you!
